Barton lay the foundations for renewable energy

Barton were contracted under RES to provide bulk earth removal and soil stabilisation for the construction of a new wind farm at Woolley Hill near Huntingdon. The project will see four turbines 30.5 metres high installed on the site with a capacity of 10MW, providing on average enough renewable energy to meet the needs of 8,000 homes.

RES are one of the world’s leading independent renewable energy project developers with over 30 years of experience in planning, building and operating renewable energy projects.

This 15 week project involved Barton removing 22,000 M2 of topsoil strip and 14,000 M3 tonnes of soil, to provide 9,000 M3 of onsite soil stabilisation with a Wirtgen WR2500S mixer and spreader, to add durability and long term weight bearing strength to the qualities of the in-situ soil.

The widely recognised effects of climate change due to carbon dioxide emissions has caused a pressing need for mankind to consider their carbon footprint, to follow green initiatives and provide more efficient and renewable sources of energy.

Climate change has to be tackled at every level and low carbon technologies that cut emissions will continue to be dependent upon in the coming years.

The UK Climate Change Act has set legally binding targets for the UK to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050, and carbon dioxide emissions by at least 26% by 2020. By 2020, 15% of the country’s energy demand will be met by renewable sources, such as wind, wave and tidal power.

Barton as part of The Bennie Group have strict CSR and green initiatives to follow, under the understanding that we all play a role in reducing our environmental impact. As a member of BREEAM we ensure that our teams are trained and encouraged to be aware of all operational effects on the environment. With careful planning Barton manage all risks to controllable levels to ensure minimal impact on the environment.
